J.G. Mendel’s bust

A sculpture depicting creation and the laws of genetics is a decoration of the Smetanovy sady in Nový Jičín.

The monumental granite monument with a marble bust of Johann Gregor Mendel was made in 1931 by sculptor Josef Obeth.

Weighing 16 tons, the granite monument to J. G. Mendel represents the miracle of creation. A man, a woman and a child stand on a chalice of flowers, symbolizing harmony and beauty. A young genius in the form of a boy extends his hands to the couple, celebrating the miracle of life. On the other hand, the deformed figures of the woman and the man remind us of the disastrous consequences of not observing the laws of heredity. Their discoverer was J. G. Mendel, a native of nearby Hynčice. His marble bust became the focal point of the monument.
