Chateau in Vitkovice

Until recently, few people in Ostrava knew that there was a chateau in Vítkovice. It was so well hidden inside the metallurgical and engineering giant Vítkovice that it was not visible at all.

The Rothschilds, the owners of the Vítkovice ironworks, had the castle built in the mid-nineteenth century so that they would have a place to stay when they came to Ostrava. Later it served as the headquarters of the company. The building was connected by a castle park directly to the ironworks and formed one natural unit with the area, which is now called Dolní Vítkovice. However, after the Second World War and during the period of rapid industrial development, the park and the building itself gave way to the needs of the company and deteriorated.

Today the chateau serves its original purpose, i.e. not as a place of residence of the Rothschilds, but as a representative space of the Vítkovice company.
