Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary

If we compare Přívoz to a luxury jewel in the form of an exemplary example of Art Nouveau architecture, then the brilliant element of this jewel is the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. Its portal and slender towers capture the enormous aesthetic sensibility of its creator, Camillo Sitte.

It was this Viennese architect who created the entire town of Přívoz. And since the local faithful went to the church of St. Wenceslas in Moravská Ostrava, which is not the closest, Sitte was given the task of incorporating the church into his plans. Its opening was to be part of the grand celebrations of the 50-year reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The construction was delayed, so the celebrations were not held in time and the church was opened a year later in the presence of Archduke Eugene of Habsburg.

The church was built in the Neo-Gothic style and the painting of the Virgin Mary, which decorates the main altar, was painted by František Ženíšek, who participated in the decoration of the National Theatre in Prague. In the towers there are three steel bells, which were made in Vítkovice Ironworks, today’s Dolní Vítkovice.

While you are in Přívoz, the Firebrigade Museum near the church is worth a visit.
