Dvořák Gardens in Opava
Many towns have grown after breaking out of their original medieval walls. They gradually ceased to serve their purpose and instead of defending the towns from conquerors, they became more of a hindrance to their further development.
The same thing happened in Opava, as evidenced by today’s Dvořák Gardens. They were created by filling in the castle moat that originally protected the town. In the mid-19th century, it was already clear that if armies wanted to conquer Opava, the moat would not stop them anyway.
Besides the beautiful trees in the gardens, you will also find a beautiful Art Nouveau thermometer box, which was added in 1913, and a monument dedicated to the poet Petr Bezruč.
