Nový Jičín visitor center – town of hats

Unearth the technological secrets behind hatmaking through an interactive exposition, which will guide you through the local hatmaking tradition, which reaches back as far as the 16th century! The second part of the visitor center is dedicated to the famous general Laudon. This building, which houses the exposition, is where general Laudon drew his last breath. For just a brief moment, you can put yourselves in the shoes of soldiers, try on a military uniform or conquer a town with the use of a cannon!

The interactive elements of this hatmaker’s exposition will ensure an active experience that will uncover the conception and production of hats, starting with skinning rabbits and hares and ending with an adorned hat. The first portion of the exposition is devoted to the technological procedures of hatmaking, while the second part, the atelier, will allow you to buy a mini hat from the Tonak workshop. When adorning your own “fashion statement”, children and adults alike will be able to express the artist in them.

The final segment of the exposition will surely excite all hat enthusiasts. The fitting roomoffers several hundred hats and other accessories, available to be fitted in order to find the best match. Visitors may have their pictures taken in the 3D fitting room, which offers 40 virtual hats. You may print the picture on site or have it emailed to you.

The visitor center is located in the Laudon house, where the famous Austrian marshal died in 1790. The interactive exhibit will take you through every phase of the general’s life and familiarize you with the zeitgeist of that historic period.

The interactive exposition has been designed both for young visitors, as well as history enthusiasts. All visitor, especially the younger ones, can have a look at, and even try on, military uniforms and equipment of the time. One huge attraction is the interactive cannon aimed at a canvas depicting the town’s fortification. You can try to blow it up! The popular general Ernst Gideon von Laudon and his military successes against the Prussians are commemorated by a three-meter-long diorama of the Domašov battle with over five hundred tin soldiers. If treasure hunts are more your speed, we offer you the chance to engage in Laudon-caching, where retrieving a code and solving a puzzle will get you a small prize.
