Piarist monastery in Bruntál
The largest building in the Baroque period in Bruntál was the Piarist monastery with the Church of Our Lady of Consolation.
The decision to build the residence of the order was made by Grand Master Franz Ludwig at the beginning of the eighteenth century. A Piarist college was built, and later a church was added to it, which is one of the most beautiful ecclesiastical buildings of the Rococo period. It is decorated with valuable inventory and especially three paintings by the Baroque painter Jan Kryštof Handke, who came from Rýmařov.
The monastery contributed to the cultural development of the town, the grammar school, which was housed there, was the basis of the local theatre industry. The Piarist monastery is not far from the town centre and is one of the places that visitors to Bruntál should not miss when looking for local history.
