Church of St. Wenceslas in Ostrava

The Church of St. Wenceslas, standing near Masaryk Square, is proof of the centuries-old history of Moravian Ostrava. The Gothic building, which has preserved much of its original mystery inside, is mentioned in 1297.

However, the sanctuary is even older – according to legend, the saints Cyril and Methodius worked there.

The church has undergone a number of reconstructions, the current form is from the late 19th century and has returned the church to the Neo-Gothic style. During renovations at the turn of the millennium, archaeologists found a human skeleton weighted down with a ceramic plate and three coins in its mouth. According to historians, people were buried this way to prevent them from turning into a vampire.

Today, the Church of St. Wenceslas is once again used for religious services and as one of the places that attracts visitors to Ostrava. The church is proof that industrial Ostrava has a long history that certainly did not begin with the discovery of coal.
