Saint Wenceslaus Church in Ostrava

Located near Masaryk Square, Saint Wenceslaus Church is proof of the centuries-old history of Moravská Ostrava. First mentions of this Gothic structure—which has retained much of its original mystery—dates back to the year 1297.

However, this house of God is actually even older. According to legend, it was host to missionaries Cyril and Methodius.

The church underwent a number of reconstructions and today’s appearance dates back the nineteenth century, returning the church to the Neo-Gothic style. During repairs at the turn of the millennium, archeologists discovered a human skeleton that had been weighed down by a ceramic slab. It was found with three coins placed in its mouth. According to historians, the deceased were laid to rest in this manner to prevent them from becoming vampires.

Today, Saint Wenceslaus Church once again serves as a place of worship, as well as a monument draw to visitors to Ostrava who are interested in the city’s ancient history that began long before the discovery of black coal.
