Dušan Jurkovič’s buildings at Pustevny
The peak of Pustevny attracted tourists as early as the nineteenth century. That is why mountain refuges were gradually built here.
The most famous of them were built at the end of the nineteenth century by the Slovak architect Dušan Jurkovič. The man, who is known for his buildings, for example, in the Luhačovice spa, reached for the proven folk art nouveau style from the Wallachia and Kysuce region.A pair of colourfully decorated wooden mountain huts, Maměnka and Libušín, were built at Pustevny and decorated with paintings by the painter Mikoláš Aleš. Both chalets offer great homemade food, gnocchi, frgals and blueberry dumplings.
Another of Jurkovič’s works in Pustevny is a bell tower with colourful ornaments. On the way to the famous statue of the pagan god Radegast and further to the top of Radhošt’, there are many restaurants and refreshment stands. The local speciality is mead, usually served heated in winter.
