The Červenohorské Saddle Pass

The pass, which cuts through the Jeseníky Mountain Ridge, was once used by merchants travelling between Moravia and Silesia. Today, the Červenohorské Saddle is one of the most famous tourist centres and one of the largest ski resorts in the Jeseníky Mountains.

Its dirt road was replaced, in the middle of the 18th century, with a new road to relieve teamsters transporting coal through the pass to the ironworks in Sobotín. The ironworks belonged to the prominent Klein family who produced rail tracks. The Kleins built shelters for teamsters, where they could stay overnight, eat and house their horses, which tired after such a difficult climb.

Tourism grew after a regular bus route through the Červenohorské Saddle was set up in 1911.
