Baroque treasures in Fulnek

Fulnek is not only the town of Jan Amos Comenius, the teacher of nations. It is also a gem of Baroque architecture of the Moravské Kravařsko region and in fact of the whole Moravia. The Baroque style impresses visitors not only via the many buildings, but also from the statues that you will see while walking around the town.

The charm of the Baroque can be admired, for example, in the grounds of the Church of the Holy Trinity. The church was built so solidly that it did not require any major repairs and was thus spared later rebuilding. Thanks to this, it has survived in its original Baroque form to this day.

Another Baroque building is the Capuchin Monastery in the grounds of the Church of St. Joseph. The monastery, built in 1674, was built in the spirit of a strict monastic community and Franciscan poverty. The cells in which the friars lived were minimal in size and the churches were built without towers. During World War II, the German army occupied the monastery, but after the war the religious continued to live there. It was not until the 1950s that the Capuchin monastery grounds were occupied by state security and the monks were taken into internment. For a while, nuns from several different monasteries lived here, but later it was used as a furniture warehouse, and later as a vegetable warehouse. And it fell into disrepair. Today the monastery can be visited and a permanent exhibition tells the story of its turbulent history. The cemetery chapel of St. Roch and St. Sebastian is also part of the complex.

The fountain of Jan Sarkander in Jan Amos Comenius Square is also Baroque, as is the Knurr Palace in the corner of the square. Another Baroque building, known as Vila Loreta, houses a children’s home.
