Chateau in Fulnek

The Fulnek Chateau can be seen from a great distance and its shape and location in the landscape is so typical that it is easy to find your way around. It is one of the most famous landmarks of the Moravské Kravařsko region.

The original castle guarding the ancient border between Moravia and Silesia probably stood on this site as early as the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries. Its first owners were either the Lords of Lichtenburg or the later owners of Fulnek, the Lords of Kravaře. Other noble families took turns in ownership and the castle gradually changed into a Renaissance chateau. Further reconstruction was carried out by the Skrbenskis of Hříšt’, but it was later confiscated for supporting the Unity of Brothers. The chateau was conquered by the Swedes, who abandoned it after the Thirty Years’ War ended.

The greatest disaster was the fire of 1801, which engulfed the entire town and destroyed part of the chateau. It was bought together with the Fulnek estate in the middle of the 19th century by King Leopold of Belgium for his son Philip. During the war the chateau was used by the German authorities and after the war as a warehouse. Today the chateau is in private hands and not open to the public.
