Silesian Museum
It sounds incredible, but the Silesian Museum in Opava (or rather its Historical Exhibition Building) is the oldest museum in the Czech Republic. Even the National Museum at the upper end of Wenceslas Square in Prague was founded four years later!
The Silesian Museum was established in the local grammar school in 1814. It was founded by local professors and the Enlightenment mayor Jan Josef Schössler, who was the “signatory” of many of the town’s great ideas.
Today the museum collects two and a half million specimens and documents and is the third largest museum in the country. Anyone who wants to learn about the history of the area from the Ice Age to the present day should not miss the Silesian Museum in Opava during their wanderings. The museum also includes other exhibitions, such as the fortifications of Czechoslovakia in Darkovičky near Hlučín. The museum is also dedicated to the legacy of the poet Petr Bezruč.
