Landek Park
At the biggest mining museum in the country, become a miner for just a moment and descend in a real elevator cage into the oldest mine in Ostrava - the Anselm mine. In typical local jargon, a retired miner will tell you about the history of coal mining (dating back to 1830 at Anselm!) and what working in a shaft was generally all about.
During the tour, you can touch and try out how heavy the machinery is that miners used underground to reinforce the coal shafts they worked in. You will also see (and hear!) the plough used to extract coal, visit a changing room with chains hanging from the ceiling, and even get the chance to ride a real mine wagon. Our smallest visitors can crawl through a practice crevice for mine rescuers and see how difficult it is to move around in a collapsed coal mine.
As part of the tour, you will also see the exposition “Horse Ferdinand and other four-legged miners”. Many legends circulate about the fate of the over one hundred horses, who, especially in the second half of the 19th century, worked not only in Ostrava’s mines… An entire separate exposition is dedicated to mining rescue efforts. And if you are in the mood to try some miners’ specialties, be sure to visit the stylish Harenda U Barborky.
A great place to go for a walk is the Landek mound, which will lead you all the way to a lookout tower and an old Slavic fort. It is from this promontory above the confluence of Odra and Ostravice that the owners of this dominion guarded the merchant Amber Trail. The Hlučín region was also overseen from here.
Landek is the site of a unique discovery, where a team or archaeologists found a statue of the Venus of Landek (a.k.a. Venus of Petřkovice). A prehistoric hunter carved it twenty-five thousand years ago and left it for the archaeologists to find underneath a mammoth molar.
The museum is easily accessible from the bike path that leads along the Odra river and links to the trail along the Ostravice river, which leads through the center of Ostrava all the way to Beskydy.
